This is the convoluted and tedious love story of Julia and Lord Damon, Marquis Savage and Duke of Leeds. They were bound in marriage at age 4 and 7; and now they are adults; but Julia has become a noted stage actress at the Capital Theater in London; and Damon believes he wants this actress as his mistress b/c he has little desire for the obscure wife his family selected for him. The premise could have been clever b/c his wife and the actress are one and the same, and something fun might have been made of it; but it wasn't. I wish all of this was believable and handled well; but it bogs several times and sputters to the end. The only question is how will Lisa Kleypas handle the mystery's solution? Pauline is a caricature of every mistress ever to grace the pages of a romance novel. She was strident, stupid, and boring.As Book 1 in the series, it does introduce characters who are central to the plot of the brilliant novel, BECAUSE YOU'RE MINE, which is Book 2 in this series. We meet Julia, Logan Scott, Nell Florence, and Arlyss, an actress at the Capital Theater - which is Logan's raison d'etre and great opus in life. We also get a glimpse of and meet the type of female that Logan prefers as a lover in this book - voluptuous, married, and calculating - a counterpoint to the woman who will soon claim Logan Scott's heart in Book 2 (I will not give that delicious secret away!) Other reviewers have mentioned a ripple of attraction between Julia and Logan in this novel; however, I failed to see it as anything more than Scott's effort to secure his theater's status and ensure its future. We are meant to accept the notion that he is a man driven by little more than his desire to succeed and shape all around him as an all-controlling and invulnerable human being.This book rates a 2.5 star rating, which Amazon does not allow for; but do read the brilliant Book 2 in the series. Amazon does not even offer a sufficiently high rating for that gem of a book!!! I've long been a fan of Kleypas, loving some books, liking others but never have I been so appalled by an ending. Spoiler alert: The story purports to be about a woman who doesn't want to be "owned" by a man, who wants her career as well as love. Sounds great. The problem, the disgruntled man in her life gets drunk and has her kidnapped including arms pinned behind her back and cloth stuck in her mouth. His refrain "your mine." When she asks if he will attempt to rape her, his response is "it wouldn't be rape." She is "saved" by another who asks to leave, then asks to stay and worse of all, at the end states, "I like being abducted." This reads like a romance novel from the 1950s when no means yes and every woman really wants to be raped even if she says she doesn't. Mind you, earlier the leading man saves her not once but twice from the threat of rape but now when he becomes the sexual threat it's ok because he loves her. How many abused women--wives and girlfriends have had to live with that nightmare. The worst part is that it's all in the guise of a female who wants a career too. A happily little epilogue has her having the career, the kids and the love but through the lens of the previous pages it rings hollow. I usually trade books with friends but this was so offensive that I threw it in the trash; the first time in my life I've ever thrown out a book. Horrible misstep by this author. She should donate the proceeds to a domestic violence shelter to make up for having this published.
